Coffee Time:
May Day Shorts

by Steve Piper

CoffeeShortsSo, May comes, the sun finally emerges and here in England we go Morris dancing and skip round maypoles just like in the Wicker Man, well we don't really anymore, just a few nuts in the countryside... Welcome back to a selection of awesome short films discovered online and served up for you from the Coffee Shorts network. As ever we have a whole mix of things to enjoy, a dash of powerful drama/thriller, a pinch of animated thriller/comedy and a classic troublemaking indie documentary exploring the animal rights movement: hope you dig them! As always, if these don't fulfill your fix check out the archive links way below somewhere, or drop in on MFM's own short film critique library (which has links to a number of films you can watch online).

Causality

A taut, tense and clever dramatic thriller short from independent filmmaker AJ Wedding and Wave Breaking Productions, Causality delivers the genuine feature film experience in such a short space of time you wonder why everyone isn't making films like this.

Very strong cast performances, smart direction and quality filmmaking from the entire crew, Causality tells the story of a dramatically imploded love triangle where one unexpected discovery and a strong reaction creates a ripple of death, lies and exposed secrets. Spot on technical filmmaking from AJ who without doubt deserves a feature budget to call his own this is a superb indie short film thriller with all the twists and turns of a feature piece.

Coffee rating: 9/10
Notes: Gripping featuresque twists and turns in a 5 minute package

ETA

An animated journey through space by the very talented animator Henrik Clausen, ETA is a film full of painstaking detail and texture that can only come from acute obsession: every pixel is in place, every shot beautifully framed, every render perfect in establishing the scene and leading us towards a gripping climax.

Not all is as it seems though and as the score raises those hairs on the back of your head indicating that something is amiss, a giger-esque surprise is waiting in the wings... Simple, thrilling and funny filmmaking with beautifully lush animation and an eye for the ridiculous, this is Henrik's first film to hit the web and we can't wait to see more.

Coffee rating: 10/10
Notes: An obsessive and funny twist on our preconceptions
