Final Critique: Even Steven, Pg. 3

Use of Budget
A feature-length film on a budget of only $700 is extremely impressive! Of course, as the majority of this movie takes place in and around one location – Dr. Steve’s house – and there are only three principal characters. Those two elements alone had to save a lot of time and money. In addition, the director was basically the only crew member, and some of the actors pulled double-duty.

The visual elements of this film are quite impressive, as is the quality of the acting. However, it seems that attention should be given to several different areas. Such as improving the score and bringing it more in line with the tone of the movie, fixing the artifacts in darker-lit scenes, condensing the story a bit, re-editing to fix some of the inconsistencies, and tweaking the obvious audio dubs.

But when Tippy’s supposed
husband shows up after the tryst
...
...Things go very wrong,
very fast for Dr. Steve.

Lasting Appeal
The concept of this film seems simple from the outset, and for a while I wondered why it hadn’t been made as a short. But there are several great plot twists that keep popping up to keep the audience intrigued.

There were a few minor issues that could stand to be corrected – the biggest of which is the selection of a more appropriate soundtrack, in my opinion. However, it’s still a very impressive feature-length film, especially considering the low budget!

Overall Comment
This was a visually strong film, with an interesting concept and some well-placed plot twists. It’s entertaining to watch, and the viewer will likely find his or herself drawn in and very sympathetic to the plight of these characters.

Though at the very least, Even Steven will make a lot of men think twice before picking up a woman at a bar!
