Software Review: The Power of Lighting, Pg. 2

Attention Captivation
Considering the nature of the programming, I feel that The Power of Lighting is effective in keeping the attention of the viewer. I attribute this to thorough explanation of concepts and varying the teaching methods. Included in each segment are the interviews, diagrams, before and after comparisons, as well as product descriptions, which all make the information more digestible. Using these varied approaches ensures many users on diverse levels will be able to grasp the message and fully comprehend it.

Reusability
The lighting principles discussed in this series are useful in any and every lighting situation. The more knowledge a gaffer possesses, the more obstacles he or she can overcome, and the more creative he or she can be when creating the lighting design. Viewers will find this material reusable for years and years.

Subject exposed by undiffused raw sunlight.

Subject exposed by diffused light with net and bounce board.

Value vs. Cost
Given that the price of this training set is little more than $100, I feel that the value far outweighs the cost of ownership. To receive the same information through a hands-on lighting seminar would cost many times what this DVD set does. I highly suggest viewers take the earliest opportunity to practice these techniques in a hands-on setting. Attempts to implement this new knowledge will help clarify the areas of training that the gaffer has yet to master; in which case viewing the sessions again, helps troubleshoot and refine one’s skills.

Overall Comment
Overall, I think this lighting education, four DVD set, The Power of Lighting for Film and Video by Bill Holshevnikoff, is well worth a gaffer’s time and money. The information presentation is thorough, practical and accurate, and the insight provided is invaluable.
