Training Review: Hands-On Training -
Adobe Premiere Pro 2
, Pg. 2

For Adobe Production Suite Premium owners, they cover a few tricks for using Adobe Bridge and After Effects to get even cooler effects in Premiere Pro 2. When APSP first came, the original demonstrations of the software showed an editor taking video from Premiere Pro 2, shuttled it into Illustrator, applied the new LiveTrace option to a single frame, and magically managed to make the tracery apply itself to every frame in the original video sequence through Adobe Bridge. While the demo glossed over a few key points, the video training on this book’s DVD goes right into the specifics of making this effect occur to create your own pseudo-animated effects. Very cool, indeed.

Attention Captivation
A training book is a bit tougher to rate on Attention Captivation than a training DVD is. The book element allows you to determine your own pace and the easy to search index makes it easy to find lessons on things you need to do at the moment, like Three-Way Color Correction. Jeff’s speaking voice in the video training is quirky and at a good speed, making it easier to pay attention and not get bored. While the series isn’t quite as engaging as if it was all on video, it does a good job of keeping you engaged, nonetheless.

The one thing that I would have liked to have seen is a greater variety of video clips in the different lessons. As it stands right now, you’re largely creating an advertising video for a resort which has some fairly vanilla shots and interviews. Having a different project in each chapter would have helped out a lot and made the training feel less like Adobe’s Classroom in a Book.

Reusability
With the easy to search interface and the timely video clips of some of the more helpful lessons, the reuasability for Hands-On Training: Adobe Premiere Pro 2 is quite high. With over fifty tutorials, you’re going to want to come back and refresh on certain skill sets as projects that require them show up.

Value vs. Cost
With an MSRP of $45 for over 50 in-book tutorials, 15 video tutorials, and the test footage to improve your skills, this is an excellent value.

Overall Comment
HOT: APP2 goes into some deep levels of Premiere Pro 2 and gives you a number of new skills to improve your workflow with this powerful new program. While it’s single main project will get a bit repetitive by the end, the tricks and concepts that it brings up as you go through it will not. A very good purchase for someone who is new to Premiere Pro 2 or for someone who just wants to get more out of the way they use Premiere Pro 2.
