Choosing Prop Guns for
a Realistic Gun Fight

by Michael Slone

Some movies call for a good shootout, or the need for realistic looking guns. The guns made by Airsoft (http://www.airsoftus.com) are realistic looking and several of them offer what Airsoft calls “Gas Blowback.” The Blowback effect is a simulation of the slide action of a real gun. The slide cycles back and forth with each shot, simulating a real gun. When gun flashes are added with a computer (check out the digital section of this book for information on this), the final results can be extremely realistic. Airsoft also makes guns without the Blowback feature. They make all types of guns including rifles, pistols and silencers. They offer such a huge selection of weapons that there is a good chance you will find what you are looking for. The normal guns range in price from about $35 to $100. The Gas Blowback guns start around $150. However, we have found most of the Airsoft guns for sale at indoor swap meets and auctions for about half that price.

The Blowback guns require you to buy a special gas (Green Gas) to create the Blowback effect. Cans of Green Gas range in price from $5 to $35.

Several of the guns also come with a removable clip. You can insert it into the gun and also “pop” it out, just like a real gun. Several of the guns can also be “cocked” by pulling back the top slide. All of these features just add to the realism. Each of the guns can work in different ways, so make sure you ask a lot of questions when you buy your gun, to make sure it will do what you want it to.
