Hey guys,
Jim Jannard, the guy who founded Oakley and who has all sorts of other creative patents, has been working with a small team of geniuses to crush everything we know about high end cameras.
He is promising a 4:4:4 4K camera that can use any super35mm lens in a professional mounting. Sounds a lot like the Sony cameras that Robert Rodriguez shot 'Sin City' with which run $120 K a pop, doesn't it?
Well, rumor on the internet states that it will be much less than $120K. How much less? We have no idea, but if there's a new player in town turning the screws on the price point for 4K cameras, then the trickle down technology is going to be awesome for cameras all across the board!
Another rumor states that this camera will be so 'affordable' that Apple is actually going to be releasing a new version of Final Cut Pro specifically with the ability to deal with the 4K datastream that this camera can kick out. While the term 'affordable' is still in question, if Apple is releasing a version of Final Cut Pro to deal with it, that says a lot. Final Cut Pro is a whole different animal than Avid Nitris and represents a whole different price point. And that price point is a lot closer to us than it's ever been before!
While there won't be any official information distributed before NAB, you can read the full interview of Jim Jannard at HD for Indies:
http://www.hdforindies.com/2006/02/hd4nds-exclusive-interview-with-jim
And you can also check out their purposefully enigmatic website: http://www.red.com
However it works out, this is a seriously interesting development and I'll make sure our camera analyst, Andy Yardy, is there to give us the breaking news at NAB 2006!
