Well folks,
We've been setting on the news about Adobe Story here at MFM for a few weeks now. Finally, we're permitted to tell you a bit more about it.
Essentially, Story is Adobe's answer to Scriptwriting software combined with certain pre-production organization tools (similar to those found in celtX and Gorilla). It's been combined with Adobe's AMP technology so that it's essentially a web-based program that has a AMP-app version you can work with on offline. (Obviously, lots of thought has been put into both online computers and, for folks traveling on airplanes, people who need to go offline and still work.) While it's a little more reliant on the internet than I would like for a standalone program, it definitely seems to work well either online or offline.
One of the really neat things about the program is that, after you import or originate your script in Story, you can actually set up your entire shot list. This shot list is stored in the XMP metadata that Creative Suite uses regularly, so that you can then pop it right into OnLocation and start shooting with your shots already set up as placeholders. Obviously, that can be a huge streamlining process for filmmakers. Because of this integration, it seems very likely that this program will be packaged in CS5, although Adobe has given no official word on this.
Now, with all of that said, Story is still a first generation program. As such, it's not nearly as sophisiticated as scriptwriting programs like Final Draft and Movie Magicscreenwriter or scheduling programs like CeltX and Gorilla. However, if it's included with CS5: Production Premium it will definitely add some nice bang for the buck for the filmmakers out there and at least give them a basic scripting and preprodution package to get into.
While we have not yet had a chance to see it, the team at Adobe is trying to tie Story in with After Effects to allow people to create animatics ahead of time. How they can do this without including libraries of 3D content, such as those seen in Poser or Frame Forge 3D Studio, we don't know.
We will be reviewing this software in the near future, so stay tuned for MFM for all the info on this exciting software! In the mean time, be sure to check out Adobe's site, because beta downloads should be available very shortly!
