... tha were either said to you or that you would like to impart to other filmmakers.

1. Thank your crew. Especially if the day was total hell.

2. Talk about your film til someone gags you. Even then it's possible to communicate using gestures.

3. Don't ever be above accepting criticisim. It's possible that you've been too in love with 'your vision' to see clearly.

4. Although the director gets much of the credit, filmmaking is a collaborative art and other people have a creative input. Steer the ship.

5. There is no substitte for sleep.

6. Tell the story. Everything lse is window dressing.

7. Never mortgage your house to pay for your film. Just don't. Don't put up anything you're not willing to go without.

8. Don't make promises you can't keep. Keep the promises you make.

9. Help someone else. Chances are you're going to need help sometime too. You are never above this.

10. Make films. Do something and keep doing it. Only then will you really learn

Jasmine,

Insightful list and also practical from other media looking to transition into film. My experience is audio playwriting with the intent of working into film. 95% of everyone in a production wants to excel. From a director and producer's standpoint, everyone is thanked for being in the studio and everyone is thanked at the end of the session.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Best,

William Spear

You have somewhat of an advantage coming from an audio background. A lot of filmmakers forget about audio and suffer because of it.

On moving into visual forms, it might be a good idea to read some Foucoult (possibly spelled wrong) and some books and 'reading' screen images. Then do it til you stop thinking about it. If you think too much about symbolisim it will show, but do keep in mind that every frame... and everyone's position within it tells a complete story in itself.

Jasmine,

You do a nice job of bringing up intelligent points lucidly. The ideas in that top ten are ones that any filmmaker would do well to remember. We try to make those ideas our mantra here at MFM.
